The phrase humble pie comes from medieval England. Originally called umble pie, it was a dish made from the entrails of a deer. The lesser cuts of meat, known as umbles, were given to the servants and hunters after a successful hunt while the lord reserved the prime cuts. Over time, the pronunciation of umble became similar to humble and the phrase came to mean having to acknowledge one's faults or lower oneself in another's eyes. | The History Page
